The rise of city-based T20 franchise leagues has fundamentally altered the economics of professional cricket. Where international careers were once the primary — and often only — route to financial security, players today can build substantial careers moving between multiple domestic leagues across different countries and seasons.

Auction systems have introduced a transparent, competitive market for player value, rewarding specific skills such as death bowling or finishing that may be undervalued in traditional formats. This has created opportunities for niche specialists and uncapped domestic players to earn significant contracts purely on the strength of franchise performances.

The league model has also accelerated the globalisation of cricket knowledge.
